| Fountain Pens A fountain pen is a pen that contains a reservoir of water-based liquid ink. The ink is fed to the nib through a "feed" via a combination of gravity and capillary action. The pen is filled with ink by using either a disposable cartridge, or a removable reservoir with a screw or piston mechanism to draw ink from a pot. This classic writing action dates back to the 1850's, and is still the choice for those who write often. |
| Ballpoint Pens The ballpoint pen was invented by Hungarian Ladislas Biro in the 1930's, after becoming frustrated with constantly refilling his fountain pen. He constructed a pen with an internal chamber filled with a viscous ink dispensed at the tip during use by the rolling action of a small metal sphere. Due to the construction of the ink, it dries almost immediately after contact with paper. Inexpensive, reliable and maintenance-free, the ballpoint, often called a 'biro' after its inventor, has become the most common pen type used in the world today.

| Roller Ball Pens Rollerball pens utilize ball point writing mechanisms with water-based or gel-based ink, as opposed to the oil-based inks found in ballpoint pen. The rollerball pen was initially designed to combine the convenience of a ballpoint pen with the smooth "wet ink" effect of a fountain pen. A rollerball also requires less pressure to be applied to the pen to have it write cleanly, which permits holding the pen with less stress on the hand. |
